10 ways to prepare your child for the first day of school

  1.  I know that shopping for school supplies is hard enough by yourself, but take your child with you.   Let your child help pick out their school supplies.  They can choose a backpack and lunch kit with their favorite character on it.  They might not be able to pick out what supplies they need for school, but they might be able to choose the color or theme that is on them.  Let your child put the supplies in the basket.  Letting them help with this will help your child take pride in their school supplies.  They are so excited to get to use their supplies when they go to school.  When you get home from school supply shopping, let your child call Grandma and Grandpa and tell them all about the supplies they purchased.
  2. When shopping for school clothes, make sure your child can button, zip and snap their clothes on their own.  If your child has a hard time unbuttoning, zipping or snapping their clothes they should not wear them to school.  You do not want your child stuck needing to use the restroom and not being able to undo their clothes and use it on themselves.  Have your child show you that they can undo their clothes before you buy it.
  3. Talk to your child about what they can expect when they go to school.  If they have never been to school before, talk about what happens if they need to use the restroom, lunch time, or need help with something.  Discuss with your child about raising their hand before speaking and not shouting out what they need.
  4. It is very important that your child understands that their will be a classroom full of children and only one teacher. The teacher will not be able to give them all their attentions.   They will have to share their teacher will all their classmates.
  5. Remind your child that the toys in the classroom belong to the classroom and not them.  They need to know how to share and play fair with others.  Make sure you stress that they will not always be able to do what they what to do.  They will need to listen to the teacher.
  6. If your child’s school has a meet the teacher night, make sure you take your child.  Meet the teacher nights give you and your child the opportunity to walk around the school and familiarize yourself with the makeup of the school.  Walk around the school and find the gym, music room, nurse’s office, library, etc.  Take your child to their classroom.  Let your child walk around the room and familiarize themselves with the classroom.  Introduce your child to their teacher.  If there is anything you need to tell the teacher about your child this is the opportunity to set up a conference with the teacher.  Do not discuss it with the teacher during this time.  It is better to discuss your child in private and not in front of your child.  You might want to bring your child school supplies to school during meet the teacher.  This way your child does not have to carry all the supplies by themselves on the first day.
  7. About a week or more before the first day of school, have your child start going to bed at their school bed time.  It is very important that your child gets enough sleep.  If your child is feeling tired during school they will not be able to focus on their school work.

I want to setup a moonwalks at the park. What is the process

Every park is a little bit different.  Generally most parks require that the party rental company add them as an additional insured.  This is intended to protect the park from liability if there is an injury resulting from the misuse of the product.  It is best to contact the park directly and ask them what their process is.

When planning to have an event at a park, it will be in your best interest to schedule in one month or more in advance.  This will save you a lot of stress.  Some parks will require you to pay a fee.  The fee may range from $25 or more.  You will also need to find out if the park has a power source.  Most inflatables require a minimum of 1 – 110 outlet.  If the park does not have a power source, you will have to provide a generator or rent a generator from the party rental company.  I have included a list of websites Houston, Harris County, and Galveston County Parks below.

“Why Can’t I Skip My Thirty Minutes of Reading Tonight?”

“Why Can’t I Skip My Thirty Minutes of Reading Tonight?”
Let’s figure it out — mathematically!

  • Student A reads 30 minutes five nights of every week.
  • Student B reads only 4 minutes a night…or not at all!

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student A reads 30 min. x 5 times a week = 150 min./week.
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes.

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 600 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year.
Student A reads 5400 min. in a school year.
Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.
Student A practices reading the equivalent of over ten whole school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.
By the end of 6th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same
reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of over 60 whole school  days Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.
One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened
considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance. How do you think  Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?

Some questions to ponder:

  • Which student would you expect to read better?
  • Which student would you expect to know more?
  • Which student would you expect to write better?
  • Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?
  • Which student would you expect to be more successful in school….and in life?
